Why do cheese knives have holes and points?

Each part of a cheese knife has a job:

  • The holes in a soft cheese knife keep gooey cheese from sticking to the blade, so you don't make a mess of your cheese service.
  • The point lets you spear a piece of cheese and pick it up. Any cheese knife with a point works this way.
  • The shape depends on the texture. A small spade knife, for example, cuts hard cheese into wedges, and then you can spear the cheese with its tip.
