Privacy Policy

Last updated October 18, 2026. This page explains what information John Eats Cheese (johneatscheese.com) collects when you visit and what happens to it. The short version: this is a small personal blog. I don’t sell your information.

What is collected automatically

  • Server logs. Like most websites, the server that hosts this site records basic information about each request: your IP address, the type of browser or device you use, the pages you ask for, the time, and the page that sent you here. This is used for security and troubleshooting.
  • Analytics (only if you accept cookies). The site uses Google Analytics to see which pages are read. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technology to collect things like the pages you view, your approximate location, and your browser and device type. Google handles that data under its own privacy policy. You can opt out with Google’s browser add-on.
  • Link and page-view counts. Short links on this site (those that start with /go/) and some page elements count clicks and views. A count records the time, the page that referred you, your browser and device type, and any campaign tags in the link. It does not record your IP address and it does not set cookies.
  • Site search. Words you type into the site search are logged, without your IP address, along with the time and whether any results were found. I use this to see what readers look for, and the log is deleted automatically after 90 days.

Comments

Comments on posts are handled by this site. If you leave one, WordPress saves your name, your email address (which is never shown publicly), your website if you enter one, the comment itself, and your IP address and browser details, which help block spam. Comments are checked for spam by a filter that runs on this site and does not send them to an outside service. If you tick “Save my name, email, and website in this browser”, WordPress sets a cookie so you do not have to type them again; it sets nothing if you leave it unticked. Older comments were moved over from Disqus, a service this site no longer uses. I can see the comments people leave, and I don’t sell or share them.

Contact form

If you use the contact form, I receive your name, email address, subject and message by email, and a copy is kept in the site’s database so messages don’t get lost. I use it only to reply to you. Your IP address is not stored with it. You can ask me to delete your message at any time.

Advertising

This site shows ads from Google AdSense. Ads only load if you accept cookies. Google and its advertising partners use cookies and similar technology to show ads, including ads based on your earlier visits to this and other websites. You can manage ad personalization in Google’s Ads Settings and read how Google uses information from sites like this one in its partner-sites explainer.

Embedded content and code libraries

A few posts embed YouTube videos. These use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode, which sets no cookies until you play a video. Some pages also load common code libraries from Cloudflare’s cdnjs service, which means your browser makes a request to that service when the page loads.

Cookies

Cookies are small files stored in your browser. On this site they come from Google Analytics, from ads, from the comment form if you ask it to remember you, and from embedded videos and affiliate sites you choose to open.

The first time you visit, a banner asks whether you accept cookies. Analytics and ads only load if you accept. If you decline, you can still read everything, comments included: there are just no ads. Your choice is remembered in a small cookie of my own, and you can change it any time with “Cookie preferences” in the footer. If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control signal, I treat it as a decline.

Affiliate links and free samples

Some posts contain affiliate links, mainly to Amazon. If you click one and buy something, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Amazon and other sites you visit through links set their own cookies and have their own privacy policies. Products sent to me for review are covered on the Review samples page; any compensation is noted in the post.

Links to other sites

Posts link to other websites, such as shops, producers and articles. I am not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites.

Children

This site is not aimed at children under 13, and I don’t knowingly collect their personal information.

Your choices

  • Accept or decline cookies on the banner, and change your mind any time with “Cookie preferences” in the footer. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser.
  • To remove a comment you left, contact me.
  • You can contact me to ask what personal information I hold, such as comments or messages you sent, or to ask me to delete it. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law; I will do my best to help.

Changes to this policy

If I change how the site works in a way that affects this policy, I will update it and change the date at the top.
