What is the difference between Brie and Camembert?

Not as much as you'd think. Brie and Camembert are both bloomy-rind cheeses with creamy centers, and they taste a lot alike, which is why people mix them up.

  • Size. Brie wheels are large, roughly 9 to 17 inches across. Camembert wheels are small, typically no bigger than about 4.5 inches. (A small "Baby Brie" in the grocery store isn't the traditional thing.)
  • Richness. Brie typically has a higher fat content, and triple-crème Bries are extra rich and creamy.
  • How you buy them. Brie is usually sold in wedges or half wheels. Camembert is usually sold whole, in a box.

If you're standing at the cheese counter and can't tell them apart, check the label. The size and the box will usually settle it.
