Can cheese be frozen?

You can certainly freeze cheese, but it is important to remember that when you do so, the molecular structure of the cheese will change. Because of this, many people are strongly against freezing cheese as a means of storage. If you do not have a problem with sacrificing some taste, then by all means go ahead.

A couple things to keep in mind:

  • Frozen and then thawed cheese are underwhelming on a cheese plate, but by all means good enough for cooking with.
  • If you plan on eating frozen cheese, best to thaw it in the refrigerator.
  • Cheeses that freeze best are high in fat content.
